Some Michigan State University students and faculty held a public forum Tuesday to talk about a recent research project that many deemed to be offensive and racially charged.
The forum was held in response to a survey given by an MSU communications professor that was intended to gauge public response to racist online remarks.
It included derogatory terms that offended and threatened many who received it.
Some faculty members spoke of creating a more transparent review process for potentially controversial research.
They indicated that type of change will take time.
Journalism student Diamond Moore didn’t like hearing that.
“My grandparents heard that, my parents heard that…that’s not something that I’m willing to accept,” she says. “Hopefully, if there’s another forum, I hear more that tells me that something is actually going to change during my time here and not 20 years after I’m gone.”
The MSU College of Communication Arts and Sciences is considering its next steps, including the creation of an internal research review team.
