A state lawmaker says Michigan should no longer let people openly carry guns into schools.
Under existing law, people with a concealed weapons permit may openly carry guns in schools and other gun-free zones in Michigan. But it's illegal to carry concealed weapons in those places.
Democratic state Representative Andy Schor of Lansing and Michigan's largest teachers' union say the open-carry "loophole" must be closed inside schools after the massacre at a Connecticut school. They held a news conference Thursday calling for passage of legislation.
Governor Rick Snyder in December vetoed legislation that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones and prohibited openly carried weapons. He says he wants schools to be able to ban guns completely from their premises if they see fit.
