You might soon be able to register to vote from the comfort of your home. Capital correspondent Cheyna Roth reports lawmakers in the state Senate passed a bill Thursday for online voter registration.
The Department of State would have to make sure that the people who apply are qualified voters and have a valid form of identification. But the idea is to make registering to vote easier.
Opponents say taking the process online opens it up to hacking. But supporters say that’s a risk anytime you do anything online – and there would be protections in place to keep the information secure.
Republican Senator Judy Emmons is a bill sponsor.
“We just think this is one more tool and one more way to make it easy for folks to apply online.” Says Emmons.
Similar bills are making their way through the state House.
