Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation requiring that Michigan driver's licenses or state ID cards not exceed the duration of a noncitizen's legal presence in the United States.
The bills were approved Monday and codify Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's existing procedure regarding IDs for temporary residents such as foreign college students.
Since 2013, such licenses have been marked with the letters "LT" for limited term.
Republican state Reps. Pamela Hornberger and Beth Griffin introduced the bills to bring Michigan law in line with federal restrictions on state licenses and cards for temporary residents.
New ID standards were created by the federal government after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Immigration advocacy groups are neutral on the legislation.
Some liberal websites falsely claimed it'd single out immigrant licenses with yellow stars.
