In the highest profile race of the night, Republican Bill Schuette lost his bid for governor to Democrat Gretchen Whitmer.
Schuette, the outgoing state attorney general, conceded the race to former Senate Minority Leader Whitmer shortly after 10 p.m. in Lansing. He said he appreciated the support he received from the White House, and wished governor-elect Whitmer success.
“I just want you to know I was so honored to be the Republican nominee for governor, and I ran to have Michigan be the leader; the leading state in our nation,” said Schuette. “Nothing less.”
Schuette leaves the AG’s office after more than 30 years of public service in Michigan, including three terms in the U.S. House.
Schuette says he’s not decided whether he will stay in public life.
