Gov. Whitmer Calls For Stricter Gun Regulations In Wake Of Mass Shootings

Governor Gretchen Whitmer wants the state legislature to act in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Whitmer says there are a lot of things the state can do to reduce gun violence.

“I reject the false narrative that’s been put out there that you can either support the second amendment or you can be for gun control. You can do both," said Whitmer.

Whitmer says she supports a so-called “red flag” bill currently in the state House. It would allow law enforcement to take a person’s firearms if there is proof the person could harm themselves or others.

More than 30 people were killed in Texas and Ohio.

Whitmer says she wants to see movement in the state Legislature for bills aimed at gun control.

“I think it’s time for us to take the politics out of this and protect our families, and our kids, and our places of public gathering," said Whitmer.

Whitmer also suggested there should be restrictions or possibly a state ban on assault rifles. She said such restrictions would not undermine a right to hunt or protect you.
