This fall, Michigan State University’sCollege of Engineering enrolled some 1,300 freshmen. More than 200 of those students are women.That’s an encouraging sign for the industry as a whole. Nationwide, far more men enter the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics than women.
A conference taking place this week at MSU seeks to address this shortage and other issues facing women in the industry.
Dr. Laura Dillon, a professor of computer science and engineering with the College of Engineering at MSU, says girls are told that fields like math are too hard for them.
Dr. Anne Fischer of Strategic Analysis in Washington, DC agrees that it isn't a matter of aptitude.
