This is the time of year when many of us pick out new books to read on summer vacation or visit the library with little ones home from school. In celebration of great books, WKAR invites you to take part in the Great American Read.

Last week, we visited with PBS President Paula Kerger about the literacy and literature program. Kerger says the whole idea behind the Great American Read  is "to identify America's most-loved book."

"We are hoping it prompts debates and conversation over America's favorite book."

WKAR Education Director Robin Pizzo aims to further the project mission.

Pizzo says, "here in Lansing, WKAR is hosting, with the support of Capital Area District Library and the University Club, a book-lover's luncheon on June 9th, 11:00 to 2:00 at the downtown Lansing library. We'd like to have lovers of books, enthusiasts - this would be an event to come out and discover great books."

WKAR TV also presents the Great American Read as an eight part series hosted by Meredith Vieira that explores and celebrates the power of reading through the prism of 100 great novels chosen through a national survey.

Parts of the series will be screened at the June 9th luncheon.

Due to the limited number of seats available registration for the event is required at WKAR.org.
