Notes from Susi

Dear Friends,

We are saddened by the recent shootings in Atlanta and our hearts go out to the victims, their families and to our friends in the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, who have endured increased hateful rhetoric and acts of violence since the onset of the pandemic. We are grateful to NPR, PBS NewsHour and FRONTLINE for their ongoing work to heighten awareness and deepen understanding around hate and racism in America. For families with young children, we have tips and resourcesto help navigate difficult conversations.

As we prepare to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, WKAR will rebroadcast and premiere several programs that shine a light on the experience of Asian Americans and their extraordinary contributions to our country.

Next Thursday, please join us for a special screening of the new WKAR documentary The Story of Us: A Michigan PBS American Portrait Special.

Thank you for your partnership in this work. Together, we will continue to use the power of storytelling to demonstrate that the great diversity of our community is what makes us stronger.

Respectfully,

Susi Elkins
