Q: How can we celebrate the Week of the Young Child?

A: Hooray! Week of the Young Child® is celebrating 50 years. Joining the celebration recognizes young children and their families as precious members of the learning community. A celebration using laughter, literacy, movement, food, art and music is a great choice in reinforcing early learning success strategies.

According to the National Association for the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC), “The purpose of the week is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.”

Ghandi once said, “The true measure of any society is found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” I think about this quote often in the work that I do here at WKAR to move the needle toward a more equitable, joyful society for our youngest members and their caregivers. The WOYC reminds me of this mission.

Recent research has indicated families with young children in mid-Michigan have greater needs than ever, largely due to COVID-19. Can a celebration help? I think it can.

A virtual celebration including these ideas is a fun way to begin!

  • Parent Appreciation with ice-cream sundaes.
  • Taste Fest with new fruits and vegetables.
  • Art Showcase featuring family collages.
  • Time for an epic dance break.

What better way to welcome spring than with a celebration filled with joy for young children and their families!
Happy Learning,
