Hundreds surrounded a memorial topped by a United States flag to honor the fallen at the Veterans Memorial Gardens in Holt. Army veteran Harvey Bumpers was among them.

“Most of those who went, went on their own accord especially these days and they gave it all for their country and for their fellow men," said Bumpers.

Today’s ceremony emcee was Navy veteran Dale Cousineau, who served on a Navy destroyer in the 1980’s. He said it was good to see many young people in the crowd this year.

“It means a lot to me just to see a lot of kids waving at to me, it kinda gets to me," said Cousineau.

Among those children... 9-year-old Maria Venegas.

“It means that we recognize people that did suffer for our country for the Civil War and all the wars that happened," said Venegas.

Her 11-year-old sister Marisabel Venegas agreed.

“It's showing our respects to the people who have done good in the community," said Venegas.
