When it comes to local rivalries, most people think of Michigan State University vs. University of Michiganbut two local fire departments are also engaging in a friendly rivalry.

WKAR student reporter Alina Zhuravel explains how they competed on Friday.

Who can cut a car in half the fastest?

It’s called The Great Divide - an annual competition hosted at Home Depot in Okemos.

The store became a stage as the Williamston High School Marching Band pumped up the crowd.

A Michigan State University "Fight Song" rendition, by the Williamston High School Marching Band, set the tone for the event.

The Meridian Township Fire Department raced against the East Lansing Fire Department.

At one minute and 57 seconds, East Lansing came out victorious for the second year in a row.

But Meridian Township Lt. Al Diaz recovered quickly from the loss.

“Today was challenging," said Diaz. "We had a little bit of an issue with the saw but it’s all just about competing and having fun.”

Sponsored by DeWalt, this event featured vendors, refreshments and a prize for the winning department - a DeWalt power tool.
