Current State talks with Judge Steven Rhodes, the new transition manager of the public school system in Detroit.

The Detroit Public Schools is once again under new management. This week, retired federal judge Steven Rhodes became the fifth person to lead the troubled school district since 2009. While his four predecessors were known as emergency managers, Judge Rhodes’ official title is transition manager.

Rhodes faces some steep challenges. He’s tasked with reining in the district’s $500-million deficit and helping DPS re-establish either a locally elected or locally appointed school board.

Judge Rhodes is well known in Michigan for his work in leading the city of Detroit through its recent bankruptcy proceedings. Current State talks with him about Detroit Public Schools.
