Republicans in Michigan’s House of Representatives have created an aggressive plan for fixing Detroit Public Schools. Critics complain that it weakens collective bargaining and delays a fully-elected school board. We talk with a charter school advocate who says the measures are worth a close look.

There is a second plan at the state capitol for rescuing the distressed Detroit Public Schools. Yesterday, Michigan House Republicans submitted a proposal that they say would help the historically troubled district avert bankruptcy and regain stability. It joins a pair of Senate bills that have been debated in its Government Operations committee for several weeks.

Current State talks with  a supporter of the new House plan. Gary Naeyaert is the executive director of the Great Lakes Education Project, which advocates for charter schools, increased accountability and parental choice in education.
