The head of the Lansing Public Schools is calling it a career. Friday was the last day on the job for Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul.
In 45 years, Caamal Canul rose from classroom teacher to principal to state education official to superintendent.
Beginning in 2012, Caamal Canul oversaw the Lansing Pathway Promise, a college readiness program emphasizing multiple fields of study.
She also presided over a $120 million bond issue that funded a series of building upgrades.
Now, she says she’s ready for her next assignment.
“You know, after 45 years, I thought ‘who am I going to sit on that porch with when I’m 80?” she mused. “The board of education, or my husband?’ I think I’ll pick my husband!”
Deputy Superintendent Mark Coscarella will serve as interim.
Caamal Canul says she’s recommending him to the school board as her permanent replacement.
