I-96 crash kills 3, injures 11

Thursday morning's I-96 pileup near Fowlerville claimed the lives of an Ann Arbor couple and a 28-year-old believed to be from Hollywood, Florida.

UPDATE 12/9/16 2:48pm: The I-96 pileup near Fowlerville claimed the lives of an Ann Arbor couple identified as 69-year-old Homer Leon Tew and his wife, 62-year-old Theresa  O’Connor Tew. The Livingston County sheriff’s department says a 28-year-old believed to be from Hollywood Florida also died. 53 vehicles were involved in the crash Thursday after a sudden snow squall sliced through  the area and dropped visibility down to 50 feet.

Thursday morning's 40 car pileup on I-96 near Fowlerville killed 3 and injured 11. The crash happened at approximately 9:45am during white-out conditions on westbound I-96 east of Walla

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Livingston County Sheriff Lt. Eric Sanborn said that the three people killed were in two separate vehicles. He also said that identities of the dead will not likely be revealed until Friday.

Sanborn indicated that weather was likely a factor in the accident, although the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
