MSU has made some changes to campus parking regulations for moped riders.

In April, MSU Police announced that starting in the fall, mopeds would not be allowed to park at bike racks. Instead, designated parking areas would be created, and moped riders would need to pay a $50 registration fee. The idea was to promote pedestrian safety and free up space at bike racks.

More than 5,000 people signed an online petition against the new rules.

Officials heard student feedback and have decided to phase new moped parking rules in over two academic years. Registration will be required, and parking at bike racks will be allowed. Riders will need to walk mopeds to the racks.

MSU Police Capt. Doug Monette says warnings will be issued to unregistered mopeds for the first month of fall semester. Starting October 2nd, $25 tickets can be issued, and mopeds can be towed after six violations.

Capt. Monette reminds riders that it’s against the law to operate a motorized vehicle on the sidewalk.

The second phase of new rules will require parking in designated areas starting in the fall of 2018.
