Vice-President Mike Pence made a stop in Lansing Tuesday to talk about agriculture.

The vice-president touched down in Lansing shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Accompanied by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, Pence later addressed members of the Michigan Farm Bureau.

The vice-president talked about expanding farmers’ access to markets in Canada and Mexico.

He also mentioned President Trump’s promise to repeal two federal regulations for every new rule put on the books.

“But we actually haven’t done that; I’ve got to be honest with you,” Pence said.  “We’ve actually repealed eight federal regulations for every new federal rule.”

Pence noted the administration’s recent rollback of an Obama-era regulation that granted broad environment protection to streams, wetlands and groundwater. Many farmers argued the regulation was an undue burden.

Editor’s Note:  An original version of this story stated agriculture is Michigan’s second largest industry.  While some studies show it to be, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports agriculture accounted for less than 1% of Michigan’s economy in 2018.
