A recent Supreme Court ruling means more than 2,200 juveniles nationwide serving life sentences now have a chance at lighter sentences or parole. Current State talks with Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III about his concerns over resentencing.
Today, we continue a discussion started last week with Stuart Dunnings III, who has been the Ingham County Prosecutor for going on 20 years. In part one, Mr. Dunnings discussed the recent increase in false terrorism threats in Ingham county. We also began discussing recent changes in juvenile sentencing.
In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that going forward, mandatory life sentences without parole were unconstitutional for juveniles. Just last month, the high court extended the ruling retroactively. That means more than 2,200 juveniles sentenced in Michigan now have a chance at being re-sentenced.
Current State talks with Dunning about what he views as the challenge of that approach.
