As of Wednesday at 9:00 p.m., the two Democratic candidates for the Michigan State University Board of Trustees appear to have edged out their Republican rivals.
With more than 7 million votes cast, it appears Brianna Scott and Kelly Tebay, the Democratic candidates for the MSU Board of Trustees will defeat their GOP opponents Dave Dutch and Mike Miller.
The Michigan Secretary of State's Office breaks down the race this way with 83 of 83 counties reporting:
Brianna T. Scott, Democratic candidate - 1,811,674 - 25.81%
Kelly Tebay, Democratic candidate - 1,737,509 - 24.75%
Mike Miller, Republican candidate - 1,525,410 - 21.73%
Dave Dutch, Republican candidate - 1,492,738 - 21.27%
Only two seats were available. Wayne County was the last county to report in this race.
Scott runs a law firm in Muskegon. She continued her studies at MSU after getting pregnant when she was 20 and becoming a mother. She said it’s important to have an MSU Trustee who was a non-traditional student and struggled to pay tuition.
Tebay works for the United Way in southeast Michigan. She said the fallout from the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal inspired her to run. Nassar is the ex-campus doctor who sexually abused hundreds of women and minors when he was supposed to be treating them for athletic injuries.
In a pre-election interview with WKAR Morning Edition host Emily Fox, Scott and Tebay talked about preventing sexual assaults on the MSU campus and lowering tuition.
