In parts of the country, there are an unknown number of old dwellings that once were the homes of slaves. For Joe McGill, preserving these structures has become a mission.

McGill is a program officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, but he works on the Slave Cabin Project on his own.

To publicize his quest, he sometimes spends the night in an old slave cabin.

McGill spoke with Current State by phone from the site of a former slave cabin in Old St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
