How do you make science fun and approachable for youth? One theory is to use hip hop. The project Science Genius BATTLES (Bring Attention to Transforming Teaching, Learning and Engagement in Science) attempts to do that. The battles are the brainchild of Dr. Christopher Emdin and Wu Tang Clan member GZA.

In the pilot project, kids in schools throughout New York wrote and performed raps covering topics like cell division, gravity, DNA and more.

Emdin also serves as  an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology at Columbia University's Teachers College. This week he spoke as part of the MSU department of education’s CREATE Science Seminar Series.

Current State Emanuele Berry spoke with Emdin about his evolution as an educator. Emdin says he started at a New York City middle school. His idea was to teach like other teachers do, but also be cool enough that his students would want to learn from him.

Hear our extended interview with Dr. Emdin on WKAR's Current State Weekend.
