The Baseball Writers Association of America has voted Waverly High School graduate John Smoltz into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in his first year of eligibility.Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Craig Biggio were also named to the Hall yesterday.
Smoltz had a standout career, mostly with the Atlanta Braves. A Cy Young Award winner as the National League’s best pitcher in 1996 when he won 24 games and lost 8, he stood out as both a starter and a reliever. He is the only pitcher in major league history to win at least 200 games and save more than 150.
