Emily Fox is the newest member of the WKAR News team, taking the helm of our local broadcasts of NPR's "Morning Edition" today. She's a Grand Ledge High School and Michigan State University graduate, returning to Michigan from her most recent post in Seattle, Washington. She speaks with WKAR's Scott Pohl about coming home.

As a student at Michigan State University, Fox interned at WKAR News and also worked at the student radio station Impact 89 FM. That's when she decided that she wanted to go into journalism. "Once I started working at the Impact, I realized that radio was probably the way into that," she says. "I was a music major, so using your voice as a way to get into journalism was really cool."

Her WKAR internship was Fox's first step into public radio, and she hasn't left since.

Fox grew up in the town of Eagle and attended Grand Ledge High School before her arrival at MSU.

After graduation, she spent some time at Michigan Radio producing "Morning Edition" producer and fill-in host. She also did some arts and culture reporting there. Two years ago, she was recruited to host "Morning Edition" at KUOW in Seattle. Now, she's back home in Michigan.

Fox loves activities like kayaking and backpacking, especially northern Michigan. She's also a singer and hopes to get back into music performance again.

Having grown up in Michigan, Fox feels a connection to the news here and looks forward to getting back into reporting here. She also hopes her music background will lead to some in-depth stories about music, concluding that she hopes to use music "as a tool to tell a broader story about identity, sense of place, history or current events...finding artists that are telling that story and using music as the venue to tell that story."

WKAR welcomes Emily Fox back to her home state!
