Radio news listeners in Michigan’s Capital Region will hear a new voice joining the NPR Morning Edition hosting team this month.
Megan Schellong takes to the air as local host for Morning Edition beginning Monday, June 21. As local host, Megan presents Lansing area and Michigan news alongside stories from national NPR co-hosts A Martínez, Steve Inskeep, Noel King and Rachel Martin.
Megan joined WKAR and MSU ComArtSci in April 2021, serving as Morning Edition local producer and reporter. Listeners have already heard her on the air reporting on local issues from across the Capital Region and Jackson.
I am incredibly excited for Megan to be part of our team,” said Karel Vega, WKAR news managing editor. “Her flexibility, not only as a host but also as a storyteller, is impressive.
“In her first few weeks here, while quickly learning and adapting to our radio operations, Megan has already produced a feature heard nationally on NPR's Morning Edition. I am looking forward to what she will accomplish in her role as host of WKAR's Morning Edition.”
In an interview with WKAR’s Sophia Saliby, Megan said, “I'm really excited to be part of this community that's passionate about telling immersive stories and speaking to the people who these issues are really affecting.
“What excites me most is being able to be a voice for the mid-Michigan community and to represent all people's voices here. As a person of color myself, our voices aren't always heard.”
Megan comes to WKAR from WLNS-TV in Lansing, where she was a digital content producer.
Prior to that, Megan was a fill-in producer for KPCC in Southern California. Her work has been featured on NPR, BBC, and USATODAY College. Megan graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in journalism.
