The Summer Solstice Jazz Festival takes place in East Lansing this Friday and Saturday. There will be live jazz downtown from a variety of groups and the Broad Art Museum is participating as well with a unique event.

A Kozmic Picnik in the Museum’s sculpture garden will feature Detroit’s Planet D Nonet playing a tribute to the late Sun Ra, starting at 1p.m. Saturday.

Current State’s Melissa Benmark talked to the leader of Planet D, RJ Spangler. He’s been a part of the Detroit jazz scene for many years and says that Sun Ra was a great composer and covered a lot of different genres in his music.
