Kathryn Edin, a co-author of the book “$2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America,” will speak in the WKAR-TV studios on Thursday.
Kathryn Edin has spent more than two decades studying extreme poverty in America. Her book examines the lives of those who survive on as little as $2 a day per person. Edin says for the last 20 years, we’ve shifted the “safety net’ toward stable working families and taken support away from people with very UN-stable employment situations. "Our cash welfare program has virtually collapsed in most states," Edin states, "even though child poverty remains constant or has even increased."
Another factor Edin points to is rents going up while renter incomes have fallen. The result of all this: extreme poverty for one and a half million households. She says the numbers haven’t moved much since the book’s publication.
