Lansing School District Remembers Board Member Shirley Rodgers

Lansing School District

Services are pending for Lansing School Board of Education member Shirley Rodgers.

The district said Rodgers died from natural causes last week.

In 2007, Rodgers was elected to Lansing's Board of Education. She had earlier retired from working in the business office of the district after more than 30 years of service.

While serving as President of the Board of Education, the district said Rodgers helped Lansing schools maintain a budget surplus. She also oversaw a $120-million bond campaign which voters approved to improve district facilities.

"No one has been a more dedicated, loving supporter of the Lansing School District than Shirley Rodgers," superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul said in a district press release.

"Shirley was a tireless advocate for education and her lasting memory will be of a fierce fighter for students."

"Ms. Rodgers was a tireless public servant, dear friend and confidant,” said Rachel Lewis, president of the Lansing School District Board of Education in a district press release.  “She served with a passion to help shape and influence this community to make Lansing a better place.  Her endearing work will be sorely missed, but her efforts will continue to live on through her great positive legacy.”

The district also said Rodgers served as a member of the Ingham County Road Commission, Tri-county Regional Planning Commission, City of Lansing Public Service Advisory Board and numerous other community boards.

Once service arrangements are made, the district will announce them.
