Young voters may play a significant role in the outcome of today’s elections across the state and locally.
East Lansing City Clerk Jennifer Shuster says 6,000 new voters were registered this year.
Many of those are Michigan State University students.
Earlier today there was a wrap-around line at one MSU campus precinct, and all campus precincts showed a high turnout as of around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening according to Shuster.
MSU senior Tim Hilton voted on Tuesday for the first time. He said frustration is driving young people to the polls.
“Think there’s a lot of bad news and especially the media has been so pertinent and young people are very active in media so they are seeing a lot more of it I guess," Hilton said.
The progressive advocacy group NextGen Michigan says it registered close to 40,000 young voters this year.
