Lansing’s Racial Justice And Equity Alliance Finds City Lacks Equal Housing Data

Lansing’s Racial Justice and Equity Alliance says the city needs more data on housing equality, affordability, and education.

The group presented the finding during a community update over zoom Thursday.

Mayor Schor created the group in July 2020 following a series of calls for police reform and changes to systemic racism in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The alliance, made up of four committees, is creating a plan to address housing insecurity to narrow the disparities among people of color.

Co-chair of the alliance’s housing committee, Susan Cancro, said having a secure place to live plays an essential role in a child’s academic success.

“Inconsistent housing is the greatest reason children do not graduate from high school. We want our children to be safe and secure. They cannot do that without secure housing," Cancro said.

The guidance also includes a recommendation to provide tenants with lead detection kits.

The group will bring a finalized plan to Mayor Andy Schor before the end of May.
