Michigan gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer is calling on Attorney General Bill Schuette to launch an independent investigation into Michigan State University’s handling of the Larry Nassar case.

On Thursday, a federal judge sentenced the former MSU sports physician to 60 years in prison for possession of child pornography.  Nassar has also pleaded guilty to sexually abusing many female gymnasts under his medical care.

Whitmer, a former Ingham County prosecutor, says it’s “squarely on the Michigan State Police” to conduct an independent investigation at the attorney general’s request.

“And I think that’s the only thing that’s going to make the victims feel like they’ve gotten any semblance of justice, and give the public confidence that we have the facts, and that the resulting decisions and ramification and consequences are the right thing to do,” says Whitmer.

MSU spokesman Jason Cody tells WKAR, “if any other law enforcement agency would like to conduct additional criminal inquiries, we will cooperate fully.”

Both Whitmer, a Democrat, and Schuette, a Republican, are seeking their party’s nomination for Michigan governor in 2018.
