A former Lansing City Council president who authorities say took money from a concession stand he managed in 2016 has been sentenced to 18 months of probation.

WILX-TV reports Harold Leeman Jr. learned his punishment on Wednesday. An Ingham County Circuit Court jury in December convicted Leeman of embezzlement.

He was on city council from 1996 to 2007 and served as its president in 2006 and 2007.

Leeman also was ordered to pay about $1,000 in restitution.

Officials said during the trial the money included purchases he made on a credit card that Gier Park Community Center Board members gave him access to so he could purchase gas.

His lawyer has said that Leeman intended to pay the money back, but had a series of hardships.
