The Genesee County Animal Control facility is getting an $8 million renovation and expansion.

A groundbreaking was held Thursday in Flint. The project is being paid for with funds from a millage that was approved by voters in 2014.

WNEM-TV reports renovations include larger cages, separate areas for new intakes and adoptable pets, a ventilation system and a new front entrance.

Paul Wallace, director of the Genesee County Animal Control, says the aim is to "bring our community a place for the animals to come."

The work at the facility about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Detroit is expected to be completed as early as August 2019.
