We talk with Rep. Stephanie Chang and Christine Sauvé of Welcoming Michigan about "Stand Strong, Respect Michigan."
The Southern Poverty Law Center has reported that hate crimes have been on the rise since the election. In Michigan alone, almost 40 incidents were reported in the 10 days following November 8th. This was the highest in the Midwest, and sixth highest in the nation.
As we’ve discussed on Current State before, these incidents of harassment or intimidation occur primarily against black people, immigrants, Muslims and the LGBT community.
In response to these incidents, elected officials in Michigan are pledging to stand against hate by fighting discrimination. They’ve signed the “Stand Strong, Respect Michigan” recommitment pledge, a project of Welcoming Michigan, the Dearborn-based Take on Hate campaign, Mothering Justice and state Rep. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit).
