General Motors and the United Auto Workers Union have reached a tentative agreement on a four-year contract.
News of a deal that would end a month-long strike quickly reached Lansing, where two plants have been shut down by the walkout.
Steve Delaney is vice president of UAW Local 602. He says the union’s national council will meet on Thursday. For now, he says “we’ll still be picketing until we ratify the tentative agreement."
Delaney says that if the national council decides to go back to work before a ratification vote, plants could reopen on Friday or Monday. If they decide to continue the strike until the pact has been ratified, he estimates it could be at least ten days before workers return to their jobs.
Details have not been released, but it’s likely that the deal includes pay hikes and a commitment to build new vehicles in the U.S.
