As officials warn of dwindling medical supplies due to the coronavirus pandemic, protective goggles are being donated to Lansing hospitals by the coach of Holt High School’s robotics team.
UPDATED AT 1:36 P.M. THURSDAY, MARCH 26: Teacher Lisa Weise reports that almost 250 more pairs of goggles have been donated from science rooms in Holt schools.
Holt High School is closed right now, but Superintendent Dr. David Hornak allowed science teacher Lisa Weise to enter so she could collect goggles. She then split up about 100 pairs of goggles and got them to McLaren and Sparrow Hospitals in Lansing.
Weise, who was Science Teacher of the Year in Michigan in 2004, is asking other teachers and robotics team coaches to do the same if they can. "I think that there are thousands of goggles in schools and in robotics rooms all over the state of Michigan that are just sitting there right now that can be given to hospitals," she explains. "I’ve been a teacher for a long time," she continues, "so I’ve connected with other teachers who are realizing that they also have lots of goggles that they’re not using right now because schools are closed, and they’re happy to help. So, people that are able to get access to their school are giving their goggles, and they’re finding people to give them to.”
Weise says she got the idea from her sister-in-law, a physician’s assistant in the Detroit area.
