The Michigan Civil Rights Commission has chosen a new leader for the state Department of Civil Rights.
Agustin Arbulu was fired as executive director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights almost a year ago following reports that he'd made sexist comments objectifying women. Since then, the Civil Rights Commission has struggled to find a replacement, including a tie vote in March that left the choice unsettled.
During an online meeting on Monday, the commission considered seven finalists, and James White received the needed five votes in the first round of voting.
Commission chairperson Stacie Clayton outlined the timeline for White’s arrival. "We will officially offer the position to him on Friday, August 28th," Clayton explained, "with a goal of having a start date of September 21st.”
White is an assistant chief with the Detroit Police Department.
