Picket lines went up this morning at Lansing’s two General Motors plants.

GM workers began picketing at the Delta Township Assembly Plant and the Grand River Assembly Plant at 6 a.m., as contract talks with the United Auto Workers Union broke down.

In all, the Associated Press reports that the strike is affecting 33 plants and 22 parts warehouses in the U.S.

A UAW spokesman says the two sides are far apart in bargaining over a new four-year contract. GM counters that it has offered higher wages and $7-billion in factory improvements that they say would create hundreds of jobs.

The AP reports that bargaining will resume at 10 a.m.
