DETROIT –
A winter storm that dumped 8 inches of snow on parts of southern lower Michigan has closed dozens of schools, caused numerous spinouts and left drivers to battle slippery, snarled roads.
Heavy, wet snow began falling late Sunday night and intensified during Monday's morning commute before it was expected to diminish later in the day.
AAA Michigan spokeswoman Nancy Cain says the auto club handled an unusually high 2,800 calls for emergency road service from midnight through 5:30 p.m. Monday. She says the calls included "a lot of spinouts, minor crashes and cars in ditches."
The National Weather service says West Bloomfield, Jackson and Battle Creek got 8 inches of snow, while Wyandotte got 7.7 inches and Mount Clemens and South Lyon each got 7.5 inches.
