LANSING, MI –
An Okemos tech company plans to expand after help from state tax breaks. Sakor Technologies designs and builds automotive test systems. It's looking at relocating in Perry township northeast of Lansing. Sakor President Randy Beattie says the Michigan Business Tax was forcing his company to consider leaving the state.
"We found that it was several hundred thousand dollars more to stay in Michigan over the next five years, than to move to Colorado, and we did a very conservative analysis at that," he explains. "And it's probably more than that."
Sakor plans to add about 25 employees over the next five years.
Corporate tax breaks have become more controversial as the state struggles with a $1.8 billion budget deficit. Critics say they should be reduced.
