Border officials seize $250K in drugs in Detroit

DETROIT –

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say they have seized more than $250,000 worth of illegal drugs within a week at the tunnel crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

The federal agency said Thursday that 16 bags containing marijuana were found Feb. 28 in a car driven by a U.S. citizen returning from Canada. Two bags containing nearly 21,000 ecstasy pills were removed from a car being driven by a lawful permanent U.S. resident coming from Canada.

The border, separated by a river and served by the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge, handles more traffic than any other crossing between the U.S. and Canada. The two facilities processed more than 4 million passenger vehicles last year.
