EAST LANSING, MI –
Room and board rates will be higher at Michigan State University in the fall.
WKAR's Scott Pohl reports, though, that rent will actually be lower for some students.
AUDIO: MSU Trustees today approved a 5.1% increase for living and eating on campus. Basic room and board rates will be $7,770 dollars a year, starting this fall.
However, monthly rent on one-bedroom apartments in Spartan Village, Cherry Lane and Faculty Bricks will see a $50 cut.
Assistant Vice President Vennie Gore says one reason for the price drop is the approval of a plan to tear down the outdated Cherry Lane and Faculty Bricks apartments.
"We didn't want to raise the rates for those students," Gore says, "knowing that in a year from now, those buildings are going to come down. So, we were being very clear."
MSU officials say only three other Big Ten Conference schools have lower room and board rates than Michigan State.
