A contentious debate over embryonic stem cell research broke out on the state Senate floor Wednesday.

A Republican proposal approved by the Senate would further regulate embryonic stem cell research in the state, and create penalties for violations of the new rules. Supporters say facilities that conduct embryonic stem cell research should have more guidelines. But those against the measure say it would encroach on a constitutional amendment as approved by voters.
State Senator Bruce Patterson was the only Republican to vote against the bills. Patterson opposes embryonic stem cell research. But he says it is his job to uphold the constitution.
"Now the people have spoken," he says. "We the people - who we serve - have amended our constitution, and I've read that too."
Governor Granholm has said she will veto any additional regulations on embryonic stem cell research.
