LANSING, MI – The City of Lansing is looking at the best ways to deal with Michigan's new medical marijuana law. The law was approved by voters in 2008 and allows for the legal sale of marijuana for medical use.
Lansing city attorney Brigham Smith says city officials are trying to figure out who can sell medical marijuana.
"And because the statue is silent on that, I think it's incumbent on the city to A: define what a dispensary is and B: define what the conditions are for legally operating one," Smith says.
Smith says the city also needs to make sure the dispensaries don't become targets for criminals. The city's first medical marijuana shop opened in Old Town. City officials will meet Tuesday to work on an ordinance to regulate the distribution of the drug.
