Stem cell reports part of Michigan budget debate

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Right to Life of Michigan will continue to push for requiring public universities that do embryonic stem cell research to report some information to the state.

It's one of the unsettled issues in the state's spending plan for the budget year starting Oct. 1.

Right to Life officials said Monday there's nothing in the proposal that goes against a constitutional amendment approved by Michigan voters in 2008. Some university researchers disagree and they're opposing the proposed requirements.

The proposal would require universities to report how many embryos and embryonic stem cell lines were received. The reports would detail how many were used for research or held in storage and how many stem cell lines were created.
