Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero says he won the Democratic nomination for governor by standing up for working class values. He says that will also carry him to victory in November over Republican nominee Rick Snyder.
"This election's all about one question - Who's side are you on?" Bernero says. "You can side with the corporate raiders and Wall Street profiteers like my Republican opponent, or you can tell them, No more! It's got to change. The working families of Michigan will have their say!"
Bernero easily defeated House Speaker Andy Dillon to win the Democratic nomination.
Dillon expressed some disappointment with the sometimes caustic tone of the primary campaign, especially in its closing days.
"Hey, let's have a great general election on the issues, on who's got the best vision for this state, who can provide the best leadership, but let's stop all the negative campaigning, and all the pettiness that have nothing to do with the future of our state," Dillon says.
Dillon did not say whether he would endorse Bernero in the general election. Dillon is a conservative Democrat who ran into trouble with unions, abortion rights supporters, and other parts of his party's traditional base of support.
