LANSING, MI –
Michigan education officials have identified 92 persistently low-achieving schools. Two of them are in metropolitan Lansing. The Department of Education says Lansing Eastern High School and Waverly Middle School are on the list because of low student scores on the MEAP and Michigan Merit Exam in recent years.
Schools on the list released Monday will have about 90 days to submit a turnaround plan to state officials. Those that are rejected could wind up under state control in a statewide school reform district.
Michigan's academic reform office could end up in charge of several individual schools or several schools within a district, depending on whether improvement plans are accepted or rejected.
More than 40 of the schools on the statewide list are from the city of Detroit.
The school takeover plan is one of several changes signed into state law earlier this year.
Schools were ranked based on a federally approved formula that includes results on standardized tests.
