LANSING, MI –
Ex-NBA player and Michigan State star Jay Vincent has been indicted for what authorities say was an Internet employment scam that bilked about 20,000 jobseekers of about $2 million.
The U.S. attorney's office says the 51-year-old Vincent and 53-year-old Anthony Portee are charged with mail fraud, and Vincent is charged with an income tax violation. Both live in Lansing.
Vincent lawyer Charles Ford says his client is "a legitimate businessman" and says he's cooperating with investigators. A number listed for Portee was disconnected.
The case involves the defendants' business Foreclosure Bank Inspection Co. promised people work.
Vincent earned an NCAA championship when he played at Michigan State in 1979-1981. He played mainly for Dallas in a nine-year NBA career.
