LANSING, MI –
Republican candidate for governor Rick Snyder says he would not rule out an expansion of Michigan's sales tax to include services. But he also says now is not the right time to do that.
"I wouldn't automatically take it off the table in the long term," he says. "We shouldn't be talking about it at all today or the next few years, but as things go about, we do need to look at a better system - theoretically - in the long term on the assumption that we're bringing down our tax burden."
Snyder also wants to get rid of Michigan's complex business tax, and replace it with a flat, corporate income tax for large businesses. He admits that would reduce revenue to the state by more than a billion dollars.
Snyder was appeared on a statewide public radio call-in show Friday morning. His opponent, Democratic candidate Virg Bernero, appeared earlier this week. The two will meet for their first official debate on October 10.
