UNION CITY, MI –
A Marine from southwestern Michigan has died while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department announced Monday that 22-year-old Sgt. Anthony D. Matteoni, of Union City, died Friday in Helmand province.

Matteoni was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Daily Reporter of Coldwater and WWMT-TV report that Matteoni was a 2006 graduate of Union City High School, and that he died in an accident while on patrol. The military didn't release details.

Matteoni had joined the Marines after graduating from high school. Union City officials are planning a memorial service.
